Seniors, walk, talk, travel, swim, jog, run, drive, dance and sing. They are very much alive and kicking. Some paint on walls or canvas and some have been known to become authors of books and inventors of gadgets that make our life easier.
Their life of working from 9 to 5 for their 40 or more years are over. They have put in their time. They paid taxes, social security and everything in between. What was left, they put food on the table for their families. If they owned a home, maybe, just maybe, they didn’t have to borrow on it and that too was paid.
It’s not easy to retire after 40 years. At first it seems like you’re on vacation and then you look for things that will keep you active and healthy. Working has it’s good points. It makes you move because you have to beat that clock.
You’re As Old As You Feel
Today, there are a lot of seniors who have retired or are about to retire More than, back in the day, because of the baby boom. We are living longer and most are seeking a longer life and a healthy lifestyle.
This is my view, “Progression for a healthy long life is in the digestion of what we eat, exercise and think.”
Exercise for Longevity
Exercises that I love to do are fun and easy. When it’s easy and fun, you look forward to doing it. How you exercise and when, of-course, is your choice. The only question I would suggest is, what makes you comfortable and happy? There are an abundance of DVD’s you can buy and a few are listed below. There are also an abundance of tools you can use if that’s what makes you comfortable. By tools I mean, standing bikes, treadmills, copper belts and on.
Time for Yoga or Dance!
My choice would be, “Yoga for the rest of us.” It is easy Yoga and for people who are arthritic, it’s wonderful. I have this DVD, and I love it.
If you are in excellent shape and you want the moves to music, then you can try, “Salsa Crazy.” Salsa dance workout is a step by step dance instructional video. This one is Volume One, for beginners, and there are others if you’re more advanced.
Walk Your Dog, but Watch Your Step!
Exercise can be achieved in many different ways. For instance, You can exercise with your dog. That is if you have one. That can be fun. I mentioned this because I have a neighbor with a small dog who jogs down my street every morning. I watched him several times. When the dog stops he jogs in place. I have heard, you allow this for dogs stop, sniff, piddle, poop and absorb the scenery. Before you decide to achieve exercise for you and your dog, both should be checked. A doctor for you and a veterinarian for your dog.
As I watched this man go by today, the dog stopped and pooped in front of him while he was jogging in place. He accidentally stepped right into the poop. He looked down took out a napkin of some sort, and wiped his sneakers. He then continued to jog and the dog followed. I thought it funny for this didn’t bother the jogger. It was almost expected and on he went. They say patience is Godly given. I believe this to be absolutely true. We just don’t use it enough to achieve what we want in life. In this case the man achieved what he wanted. His exercise for the day.
Walking is another good exercise for any one of us. All you need is a good pair of walking shoes. This can be a 20 minute walk with a friend or friends that walk and talk and make it fun or a walk to the market. A walk to your favorite park or a friends house. Just make sure you have a cell phone with you. A good idea would be, next time you have a physical, ask questions as to what you can do and what you cannot do. Professionals love the idea of you exercising in one form or another, so ask.
